Moment of Impact

On a summer day in 1989, Leonard Loktev, a Russian émigré, was struck by a car and left in a near-coma. Eight years after the accident, his daughter Julia Loktev has found the courage to make this moving documentary drawing us into her family whose lives were irrevocably changed. Julia and her mother Larisa, Leonard's primary caretaker, discuss difficult questions with few answers, and expose their pain as they interact with a father and husband who is not the man they once knew. Through humor, determination, and sheer emotional will, Larisa holds herself together in the hope that her daughter will be left free to live her own life. This expressive, deeply poignant family portrait, with its glowing black-and-white photography, is a courageous meditation on the unpredictability of our existence.
