Monterey Pop

The first great Pop festival, the first great festival film. Of the star performers...only The Who survive in their original form. In other words, you see `em here or, for the most part, you don't seem `em at all. Janis's Monterey performance of 'Ball and Chain' is the acknowledged highlight; it was also the finest recording she ever made. And the look on Mama Cass's face when Janis stomps off stage is worth the price of admission alone. Performers: Otis Redding, The Mamas and the Papas, The Who, Janis Joplin, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jimi Hendrix, Country Joe and the Fish, Scott MacKenzie, High Masakela, Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane, The Animals, Ravi Shankar. --Music and the Movies, PFA '75, notes by Greil Marcus, Michael Goodwin and Charles Lippencott.
