Murder in Reverse

A stevedore (Billy Hartnell), after chasing his wife's lover to an uncertain end in the quay, serves a fifteen-year murder rap. His ex post facto search for his "victim" brings up a legal (and narrative) conundrum. William K. Everson: Though scorned by the New York Times, this was a surprise hit in England, and helped establish William Hartnell as something of a British Cagney, and a star who was capable of carrying a film on his own. It's a good and atmospheric little thriller, its content tipped off by its title, but still offering genuine tension as to how the predictable ending will be handled.
