Musical Documents by John Cohen
In the sixties, John Cohen-founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers and an acclaimed still photographer-began to make films on indigenous music, tracing its roots in ancient cultures and examining its contemporary social role. The films he has made over the last twenty years have been honored with major festival awards and recognized as works of art in their own right. Tonight's program features: The End of an Old Song (1970, 27 min): Unaccompanied ballad singers from North Carolina featuring Dillard Chandler and others. Musical Holdouts (1975, 47 min, Color): A musical survey of American folk traditions including hand-clapping games from the Carolina Sea Islands, Appalachian, bluegrass, cowboy and Oklahoma Indian music, and Berkeley street musicians. Gypsies Sing Long Ballads (1982, 30 min, Color): Scottish gypsies perpetuate cultural elements which the mainstream has discarded, thus becoming the real guardians of ancient Scottish singing traditions. A Continuous Warp (1980, 30 min, Color): An examination of the warp-patterning tradition in Peruvian weaving that has continued over five thousand years. Mountain Music of Peru (1984, 58 min, Color): Cohen's much-acclaimed documentary about the haunting Huayno music that is played by the descendents of the Incas in Peru.
