My Learned Friend

"Will Hay's last comedy was his least typical, and thus is probably easier for an American audience to understand! Actually it's an early film noir comedy, with Hay and Claude Hulbert tracking down mass murderer Mervyn Johns. A forerunner of such 'black' Ealing films as Dead of Night and Kind Hearts and Coronets (scenarist John Dighton also worked on Kind Hearts), its highlights include a visit to an insane asylum where Ernest Thesiger is one of the pottier patients, and a Harold Lloyd climax on the hands of Big Ben. This is the first U.S. showing." William K. Everson
