My Sister Eileen

Those two sisters who delighted audiences back in black-and-white '42 returned in Technicolor in '55, this time singing and dancing. Janet Leigh has the Rosalind Russell role of Eileen in the story (based on Ruth McKenney's account of herself and her sister, who subsequently married author Nathanael West) of two Ohio renegades who take a Greenwich Village flat. Jack Lemmon is the magazine editor whom Ruth (Betty Garrett) lures into her lair by pretending she is the man-chased heroine of her hilarious "My Sister Eileen" stories. But it is the soda jerk, dancer and choreographer Bob Fosse, who steals the show in a film that has been hailed as "both an elegy and a new dawn for the dancing musical" (National Film Theatre).
