"A genuinely superior 'B' western, though at the time, with George O'Brien still a big name, it would hardly have been considered in that category. Few Westerns combine a star persona with first-rate action, solid production values and an excellent script as this one does. Quite grim for a Western, it has overlappings from the then-current horror cycle, while its atmospheric camerawork betrays the Murnau influence that still hovered over Fox." William K. Everson
