Naples Of Long Ago (Napoli D'Altri Tempi)

Admission: $1.50

Vittorio de Sica plays a young composer of popular songs, working in a store to support himself, in this warmly atmospheric film set in turn-of-the-century Naples. In seemingly accidental circumstances, he meets a woman named Maddelena (Emma Gramatica), who helps him get a piano and advance his career, but who strangely opposes his flirtations with her niece (Elisa Cegani). The denouement is a surprise, and so are many of the marvelous directorial touches in this unheralded film.
