A Nation Aflame

“Directed by Victor Halperin (White Zombie) and based on a story by Thomas Dixon (author of The Clansman, on which The Birth of a Nation was based), this intelligent exploitation picture from the '30s could have been better with more money and a major studio behind it. But in the Production Code-dominated mid-'30s, no major company would have risked it. Independents, selling on a states-rights basis, often had a good deal more freedom than the institutionalized Hollywood, and this is a very gutsy little tale of political racketeering and graft. Although it's anti-Klan, several shots of the night-riding Klan do recall The Birth of a Nation.” William K. Everson
