Negative Space 7
Former film critic turned filmmaker and video essayist, Chris Petit applies his cool detachment, idiosyncratic engagement, and subversive observation to image-making in the fin-de-siècle Society of the Spectacle. In Negative Space, he interviews legendary film critic turned painter Manny Farber, applying some of Farber's key concepts and observations to images gleaned from film history and from Petit's 1998 road trip across the Southwest to Farber's home in San Diego. Petit uses video rephotography to play the banality of a prefabricated, ephemeral landscape off the enduring, mysterious spaces of cinematic memory. (40 mins) Shown with: Radio On (Remix) (1998, 24 mins): Petit retraces the journeys of his milestone 1979 anti-road movie Radio On. Surveillance (1993, 10 mins): Petit posits a new cinematic genre in the surveillance camera.
