Nell Gwyn

“In response to many audience requests at prior seasons, herewith two of Anna Neagle's best - and most popular - films.” --W.K.E.

“Clearly influenced by the previous year's The Private Life of Henry the 8th, Nell Gwyn introduced Anna Neagle to the field of historical biography. Faster, funnier, and less pretentious than some of the follow-up films, Nell Gwyn was something of a cause célèbre in 1934 because of the extensive recutting - and re-shooting - required by the American censors. Our print is of the uncut original British version - still bawdy and full of remarkable cleavage, but in the light of what goes on on the current screen, hardly eyebrow-raising. Cedric Hardwicke is a delight as King Charles.” --W.K.E.
