Never Let Go

Rather too late in the day to be a bona-fide film noir, this tough thriller clearly draws its inspiration and basic plot premise from the Italian Bicycle Thief and then heads into sheer melodrama with Richard Todd pitted against Peter Sellers, cast very much against type as a sleazy head of a car-stealing gang. At the time, Never Let Go was considered rough and violent enough to warrant Britain's "X" adult-only certificate. --WKE The Story: Todd, a failing cosmetics salesman, has his car stolen by Sellers' thugs. He then turns this misfortune into a personal vendetta. In his determination to retrieve his sedan, he loses his job, inspires the ire of the police, nearly loses his wife and is subjected to a number of merciless beatings. Sellers is almost unmodulated in his portrayal of the vicious ringleader. For Sellers fans expecting some humor, this film could be retitled "The Rat That Roared."
