New Iranian Documentaries

This is a selection of riveting new documentaries that show changes in contemporary Iran. You will never again think traffic is bad in your city after watching Deadtime, a remarkable portrait of what drivers do during the worst gridlock ever. Tehran, the 25th Hour was clandestinely shot on video during the frenzied street celebrations which followed the Iranian football team's defeat of Australia to qualify for the 1998 World Cup. A Place Called Home is a touching exploration of the director's search for identity as an Iranian woman with a Western education. (Weaving interviews with her mother, determined to stay in Boston, and her father, equally rooted in Tehran, she explores the land of her birth for its emotional quality, so different from the U.S.) Silk looks at the creation of the fabric by incorporating fictional techniques to tell the story of a silkworm breeder, a young woman who is waiting for her husband and expecting a baby. Silk recently won top prize at the Tampere Short Film Festival in Finland.-Alissa Simon
