On the Night of the Fire

"An extremely rare British film that has been missing almost since its original release. Despite good reviews, it had the bad fortune to go into release in the early days of the war just as the theatres were all (though only temporarily) closing. Later it seemed much too gloomy a property for audiences needing a boost in morale. Virtually the first bonafide British film noir (appropriately enough, with a score by Miklos Rosza and stylish camerawork from Günther Krampf), it is a resolutely down-beat tale of entrapment, with theft and blackmail spiraling into murder. Ralph Richardson (in a role made to measure for Robert Newton) and Diana Wynyard don't entirely convince as middle-class shopkeepers, but Henry Oscar is in his element as the sniveling blackmailer."
