Night World and Moonlight and Pretzels

“With this gangster melodrama/musical, Universal was obviously trying to jump the gun on the upcoming Grand Hotel, and repeat the success of their own Broadway. In some ways, it's a much better (though smaller) film than the latter, its seediness and economical sets much more appropriate to the story being told than the over-produced and much too spectacular Broadway. Lew Ayres and Mae Clarke, a likable Universal team of the period, perform well, George Raft has a lively minor role, and Boris Karloff is impressive if a trifle too British as the night-club boss. A Busby Berkeley musical routine is interesting for the effects it achieves with no spectacle and only a handful of girls. Long considered a ‘lost' film.” --W.K.E.
