NYC, Just Like I Pictured It

Classic and contemporary films pay homage to the architecture, culture, and pace of New York City. Helen Levitt's photographs come to life in her stunning portrait of children on the Upper East Side, a silent meditation on street culture, In the Street (1952, 16 mins, Silent, B&W). Shirley Clarke creates a wonderfully funny documentary in Skyscraper (1959, 20 mins, Color/B&W): beat poetry and jazzy rhythms are the aural accompaniment to dazzling images of 666 Fifth Avenue being built from the ground up. Similarly, Bridges-Go-Round (Shirley Clarke, 1958, 3.5 mins, Color) magnificently captures the speed and spirit of New York, creating an unusual dance of bridges in Manhattan. Marie Menken takes a stop-motion tour through the city in her film Go Go Go (1962–1964, 11.5 mins, Silent, Color). The beautiful and meditative animated film Vanilla Egg Cream (Johanna Hibbard, 1999, 7 mins, Color) chronicles the daily life of a couple living in an eclectic neighborhood in New York. Street music and exterior city sounds mingle as the partners argue and share an intimate moment. Also including Abigail Child's beautifully edited, optically printed look at the Bronx, Some Exterior Presence (1977, 8 mins, Silent, Color), and other films.
