Obsession

A heightened homage to Hitchcock's much-valorized Vertigo, Obsession induces bouts of dizziness through its whirlpooling camera moves, eddying Bernard Herrmann score, and maniacal plot twists, replete with body doubles and double crosses. As penned by Paul Schrader, a New Orleans developer (Cliff Robertson) slips into emotional oblivion after the rescue of his kidnapped wife (Genevieve Bujold) and daughter is botched. Years later, he returns to the Florence cathedral where he first met his wife, only to encounter her absolute likeness (also played by Bujold). Cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond sets this psychological space spinning with vast pans, mimicking an obsessive return to earlier trauma.
