The October Man
“Hailed at the time for its introduction of a new British directorial talent (it was Baker's first, and possibly still his best), this was somewhat overrated as a mystery thriller, since its ‘mystery' is decidedly predictable. But British critics, unaware then of course that 1947 was the peak year for film noir (in Britain as well as in Hollywood), didn't recognize it for what it really was--an almost definitive noir essay, and a British parallel to Hollywood's Somewhere in the Night. Stylish and very black, with Juliette Mills (now very grown up, a star of movies and TV, and married to Maxwell Caulfield) making an impressive debut as the toddler whose death launches John Mills' neurotic despair.” --W.K. Everson
