The Odds of Recovery is the story of filmmaker Su Friedrich's battle with a multitude of illnesses and her struggle to untangle the web of Western medicine. Both poignant and funny, this intimate self-portrait looks at aging, personal stagnation, and emotional growth. It documents the filmmaker's fight to understand her body as well as the private world of a long-term relationship. Interweaving documentary and first-person experimental filmmaking, borrowing texts from medical, self-help, and gardening books, Friedrich takes the viewer on a journey through the seasons, telling a story of rebirth and one woman's determination to understand and gain control over her body and her life.
