Ode to Olivia Newton John

Starring the Beaver Kid, Sean Penn, and Crispin Glover While working for a TV station in Salt Lake City, filmmaker Trent Harris came upon a peculiar young man from Beaver, Utah who was obsessed with Olivia Newton John. In a fevered impersonation, the pride and joy of Beaver would don blonde wig and leather and chirp off-key renditions of Olivia's hit songs. Harris made a short documentary, The Beaver Kid (1979, 30 mins, Video), which he showed to a not-quite-discovered Sean Penn. In a fevered impersonation, Penn donned blonde wig and leather and chirped off-key renditions of his own-adding a little muscle to the mugging. This sketchy work came to be known as Beaver II (1981, 20 mins, Video). Not willing to give Beaver the cleaver, Harris then showed these tapes to Crispin Glover who, yes, donned blonde wig and leather and chirped off-key renditions of hit songs by the slightly twisted Olivia Neutron Bomb. Shifting the story to Anytown, USA, The Orkly Kid (1985, 34 mins, 16mm) is the final rendition, with Glover as the gender-bending misfit who ironically inspired the stars. See all three!-Steve Seid
