The Old and the New: From Canyon Cinema

Since Canyon Cinema published the 25th Anniversary edition of its catalog, in 1992, over 150 films have been deposited in the cooperative. Among them are films from the avant-garde's past. Bruce Baillie included Here I Am (correction: 1962) from the early sixties, "a never before released early film made for an Oakland school for mentally disturbed children." Overstimulated, (correction: 1960) restored in 1995, "is an early filmic exploration of the 'aesthetic delirium' which Jack Smith developed in his later films.'' What Do Two Rights Make? (correction: 1983) is "the final work from Pasadena's venerable filmmaker (Sara Kathryn Arledge), a modern-day Greek tragicomedy, replete with appearances by gods, goddesses, wood-nymphs, and talk show hosts." Rose Lowder's 1979 two-projector piece Certaines Observations (Certain Observations) (correction: 1979) "was structured while filming one evening the July 14th street celebrations." Stan Brakhage's recent Two Found Objects of Charles Boultenhouse (correction: 1996) is comprised of "material found in boxes of unfinished film projects which Charles Boultenhouse (and presumably Parker Tyler) worked with in the 1950s-60s." In Chris Welsby's newest film, "the picture plane is in continuous motion like the ocean which, on the surface at least, is the subject of Drift." Split Description by local filmmaker Andy Moore "utilizes a concentric split-screen technique to present a kaleidoscopic moving montage of three diverse locales." Kurt Kren's 49/95: tausendjakrekino (correction: 1995) celebrates 100 years of cinema.-Canyon Cinema Catalog Here I Am (Bruce Baillie, 1962, 11 mins, B&W).
