Older Brother, Younger Sister (Ani Imoto)

“This is the original film adaptation of a popular short novel by Saisei Muroo about a young woman (Mon) who returns to her home village from Tokyo pregnant, ruining her younger sister's marriage plans and arousing the wrath of her very possessive older brother (Ino). It was remade in 1953 by Mikio Naruse and as Ino and Mon in 1976 by Tadashi Imai. It is representative of a concern evident in many films in this series for family responsibilities, exaggerating the message that every individual's destiny is inextricably bound to that of fellow family members. Ino's obsessive concern for Mon grew in subsequent versions to suggest an incestuous relationship, impermissible in the carefully regulated films of 1936.” David Owens
