The Olympic Winning Lady (Die Olympiasiegerin)

Actor, director and literary stylist Herbert Achternbusch is a Bavarian Charlie Chaplin who has invented a supremely absurd other-self in pseudo-auto-
biographical satires including Bye Bye Bavaria, The Last Hole and The Ghost. The Olympic Winning Lady is his fantasy about his own conception and birth--timed to coincide, more or less, with the 1936 Olympics, in which his sporty mother might well have competed for the herculean strength she showed in bringing “me, the oversized Herbert, into the world.” Achternbusch portrays his own father in these imaginative impressions of his parents' love, his father's peccadillos and his mother's revenge, all translated through the cabaret style he has perfected, spiced with vulgarity and a distinctly Bavarian humor.
