One Girl Against the Mafia

The daughter of a mafioso murdered by cronies, her brother gunned down in similar fashion, Rita Atria was desperate for justice. But the mob code strictly forbade talking to the police, and Rita's own mother threatened her if she testified. A sobering saga about the price of youthful idealism, One Girl Against the Mafia blends documentary techniques with Rita's home movies and diary entries. The effect is not unlike a scrapbook of postcards and dreams, filled with innocent exuberance but tinged with bitter mockery, since freedom is an illusion in Mafia circles. It took a woman to pull back the curtain on pop-culture romanticism of gangland loyalties.
