Oral History, Praise and Nadine Gordimer Interview
For an introduction to The Gordimer Stories, please see program note for September 12.
Oral History
A village chief is troubled to discover members of his tribe concealing guerilla fighters; he has been warned by government forces of the serious consequences of such an act. Fearing for the people of his village, he turns to those same authorities to protect them, revealing his tragic misinterpretation of their concern. Oral History was shot in Kenya. Directed by Ross Devenish. Written by Nadine Gordimer. (60 mins.)
Praise
Praise is an impoverished black child who is taken under the wing of an Englishwoman and a priest who recognize his aptitude for learning and obsessively strive to bring it to full flower. Praise is about to become South Africa's first black scholar at Oxford, but before the “fairy tale” can occur, he succumbs to the pressure of his alienation and mysteriously disappears. Directed by Barney Simon or Manie van Rensburg. Written by Nadine Gordimer. (60 mins.)
