IN ORDER NOT TO BE HERE
Shot entirely at night, Deborah Stratman's beautiful film In Order Not to Be Here is a haunting portrait of suburban communities. Gated neighborhoods, well-stocked convenience stores, and offices monitored by security cameras are immaculate, brightly lit, but free of people-with the exception of security guards and police officers. Yet, when a helicopter pursues a solitary figure in a long, dramatic shot, our sympathies are complex. A modern city symphony, In Order Not to Be Here reveals the silence and rhythms of a society designed around fear and predictability.
