Orphan of the Wilderness

"This is one of the most remarkable Australian features of the thirties, literally a combination in its own way of Sequoia (a live-action film) and Disney's Dumbo-but dealing with the trials and considerable tribulations of a kangaroo rather than an elephant. Like most Australian films of the thirties, it was cut for U.S. release, and this version (titled 'Wild Innocence') is of the American release. It is both shortened and softened: the kangaroo's girlfriend (also a kangaroo!) commits suicide in the original, and here it is made to look like an accidental death. But the rather rambling narrative is tightened by the editing, and the best of the circus and outdoor material remains, with a bang-up Western chase climax." William K. Everson
