The Osterman Weekend
Seeing is not believing in this complicated adaptation of a Robert Ludlum novel. The Osterman Weekend, a thriller bulging with TV-induced paranoia, concerns the turbulent reunion of John Tanner (Rutger Hauer), an investigative TV reporter, and three of his former collegemates. Enter Lawrence Fassett (John Hurt), a saurian little CIA agent, and the plot thickens as the blood congeals. Head sleuth Burt Lancaster believes these weekend barbecuers to be members of OMEGA, a sinister terrorist organization. An uncredited star of this film is the truckload of high-tech video equipment that turns Tanner's home into a surveillance matrix. Using monitors and full-frame video images, Peckinpah (in his last film) confounds point of view and pads human interaction with layers of technology. From within his master control, Fassett maintains an almost hygienic coolness while he violates the privacy of his televised victims. Reruns of the brutal death of Fassett's wife carry equal weight with the "live" feed of his intended quarry. The Osterman Weekend makes the viewer a party to the crime as it squelches our objections through the low resolution of television's calm voyeurism. Steve Seid
