Five college youths, sent into the wilderness with an agricultural production corps in the cause of reclaiming China's wastelands, years later reflect on this period in which some of them lost their innocence, and others found an ideal. The changes wrought on their characters and relationships by the hardships of physical labor, the harsh beauty of their surroundings and their experiences with the local peasantry are all recounted in flashback.
