In & Out of Fashion
The singularity of Klein's vision is on full display in this autobiographical annal of photographs, film clips, commercials, and drawings. From his vivacious fashion photos to the aggressive images plucked from the streets of New York and Tokyo through the fully conscious compositions for feature films like Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? and Mr. Freedom, we clearly see the persistence of Klein's unifying aesthetic, bold, witty, and ill-mannered. Klein intercuts his original sketches for the features with sequences from the finished films to show how the hand renderings contain a dynamism of their own. Playful interviews with Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Agnès B, and others broaden the context, while rarely seen Klein commercials and footage of Yves Saint Laurent's first runway extravaganza add further buoyancy. In & Out of Fashion exemplifies the strange course of Klein's career in and out of favor, but unlike a passing fashion, Klein is always in vogue.
