Package Tour (Társasutazás)
A tour in 1982 of Auschwitz: the group of Hungarian visitors congregated around the tour bus are Jews from the generation that not only knew of Auschwitz, but knew it intimately. The majority are survivors of the camp, others are sons, daughters, brothers or sisters of former inmates. They have come to find something; but just what Auschwitz is today, for them and for others, is the question this probing documentary poses. Into their impassioned investigation the past surfaces unexpectedly to become the present; meanwhile, other tourists click cameras and the German tour guide recites an alarmingly prideful cant about the mechanisms and functions of the death camp. Irony informs the cinematography and direction of this thoughtful addition to the Hungarians' exploration of the ghosts of their Nazi experience.
