“Exactly the kind of film, played straight, that Preston Sturges kidded so devastatingly in The Lady Eve, with Frances Langford as the equivalent of Stanwyck and Sir Guy Standing doing well in the card-shark/con-man Colburn role. Fonda's snake-hunter is here an honest cowboy played by Smith Ballew, and David Niven is the rich prize. A typical post-Code comedy, moral but brittle, and with some excellent songs--including the memorable ‘I Don't Wanna Make History, I Just Wanna Make Love'!” William K. Everson
