A Paramount Musical Parade
Sleekness and witty sophistication were the hallmarks of the Paramount musicals of the 1930s and 1940s; but there were a lot of zany goings on, as well! Martha Raye, Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Mae West, Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald, Fred Astaire, Duke Ellington... these are only a few of the many performers highlighted in tonight's program of film clips presented by Charles Hopkins of the UCLA Film Archives. Clips from twenty Paramount films--all 35mm, many Nitrate--will include the bravura Rouben Mamoulian musical Love Me Tonight--considered by many critics today to be the best musical of the 1930s; Paramount on Parade, directed by Dorothy Arzner to show off the Paramount personnel in a delightful compilation of skits and musical numbers; and The Big Broadcast of 1932 and 1938, nostalgic feasts featuring American radio stars of the period in amusing burlesques at their own expense. Also featured will be clips from College Rhythm (and its songwriting team, Gordon and Revel, working on the score in the short film Hollywood Rhythm), Rhythm on the Range, Dr. Rhythm, Holiday Inn and many more.
