Parisette (Episodes 1-6)

Newly Restored Print!Jon Mirsalis on PianoEpisode 1 ManuelaEpisode 2 The Secret of Miss StefanEpisode 3 The Neuilly CaseEpisode 4 The InquiryEpisode 5 The TrailEpisode 6 GrandfatherViewers who have followed the delirious intrigues of Fantômas, Les Vampires, and Louis Feuillade's other sensational serials won't want to miss the French master's rare ciné-roman Parisette, showing at PFA over two nights in a recently restored print from the Cinémathèque Gaumont. This twelve-part melodrama details the intertwined fates of a Portuguese nobleman, a Carmelite nun, and a mysterious look-alike. Although Parisette departs from the underworld milieu of Feuillade's most famous films, it still displays the director's characteristic narrative richness and poetic naturalism. Star Sandra Milowanoff's performance recalls the fragile purity of Lillian Gish, and leading man Georges Biscot manages to be both comic and heartbreaking. The great director René Clair makes his second and last screen appearance here; beloved Barrabas star Gaston Michel was also slated for a featured role, but died of pneumonia on location in Portugal and was replaced by the equally talented Bernard Derigal. Be sure to come back on Sunday for the thrilling conclusion.
