Passin' It On and Adam Abdul Hakeem: One Who Survived

Passin' It On (John Valadez, USA, 1992) Former Black Panther Dhoruba Bin Wahad (Richard Moore), after serving nineteen years in prison for shooting two New York City police officers, was released in 1990 on the basis of misconduct by the prosecution. Even as the state pursues its intention to make him serve out the rest of his twenty-five-year sentence, Wahad remains a committed activist. Passin' It On examines his legal battle through interviews with a wide range of participants in the events-this, alongside an exploration of the Black Panther Party, from its emergence in New York through the counter-insurgency program directed against it. Jazz, poetry, and beautiful archival footage of Brooklyn in the fifties complement this study of the political debates so important to the generation coming of age after the Civil Rights movement.
