The Personals

The Alliance Stage Company, on New York's Lower East Side, is a theater project for seniors. Under the direction of Seth Glassman, twelve amateur actors wrote and starred in The Personals: Meeting in the 90s, a play about loneliness in later life. Each of the actors presented themselves as a "living personal ad," an imaginative recreation of themselves able to negotiate companionship and romance. Keiko Ibi's poignant documentary The Personals parallels the development of the play with intimate interviews with principal cast members. Predominantly in their seventies and all single, the actors bare their souls, speaking of their fear of isolation and a lack of romantic fulfillment. The stories are often provocatively frank, recounting unsatisfactory marriages, confused sex lives, thwarted romances. The common denominator is intimacy, the human touch, the companionship and regard of a close (but not too close) relationship. For some, the play itself becomes a liberation, a chance to enact themselves, to confront and release fears, to become, perhaps, that vital, adored person for all to see.
