The Phantom of the Convent (El Fantasma del Convento)

A married couple (Eduardo and Cristina), and their friend Alfonso, lose their way in the countryside, and are led by a mysterious guide to the Monastery of Silence. Cristina tries to induce Alfonso to commit adultery with her. Their story is similar to one told to them by the Father Superior, about a Father Rodrigo who seduced the wife of his best friend, and died in the convent without confession. Passion, eroticism, supernatural happenings, a liturgical mood, all add up to an interesting excursion by De Fuentes into a genre to which he never returned.
“...One sole scene of great intensity and distant elegance holds together the whole story.
“The narrative convention thus becomes an uncontaminated, prolonged, poetic experience... in spite of the elementary primitivism of the cinematographic language of the Mexican films of that period.”
