Phatik Chand (Phatik and the Juggler)

The renowned Indian director Satyajit Ray has a great reputation as a creator of children's books and films; now his son, Sandip Ray, has directed his first film from a Satyajit Ray story and the result is a delightful adventure that should appeal to adults and children alike. Bablu, the charming, sheltered, 12-year-old son of a wealthy barrister, is kidnapped by a gang of hoodlums and then left on the side of the road when their runaway taxi collides with a truck. Suffering from amnesia, he adopts the name Phatik Chand and is taken under the wing of a migrant juggler, Harun, who regales him with stories of an impetuous and carefree life. Their growing friendship provides the moving core of the film, and after his adventures on the road with the kindly juggler, Bablu returns home much the wiser. Cinematography by Soumendu Roy, Satyajit Ray's cameraman, and a musical score by Satyajit Ray complement Sandip Ray's deft direction.
