Pieces of April

A comic and poignant story of a family coming together, and falling apart. April (Katie Holmes), a quirky suburban refugee living in New York City, has always been a black sheep, so when she and her boyfriend (Derek Luke) invite her family to the city for Thanksgiving, ambivalence reigns. Does the family want to come, and does April really want them? While April is wrestling with her first effort at cooking a turkey (requiring the expertise of practically everyone in her apartment building), her relatives-including a curmudgeonly mother (Patricia Clarkson) who may be dying, a resentful kid sister (Alison Pill), and the guys who try to placate and manage-are struggling with the displeasure that contact with April often brings. Director Hedges weaves an inviting but never sappy tale about constructing your own family as an antidote to the pain and suffering caused by clashes with your biological one.
