Pierrot Le Fou

"In making Pierrot Le Fou," Godard has said, "I wanted to do a kind of You Only Live Once, a story of the last romantic couple alive...." Pierrot neatly reverses the Lang story with Jean-Paul Belmondo playing the fool, implicated in the gangster world of his lover (Anna Karina). The pathos of modern living is as powerfully expressed through Godard's experimental, philosophical exposition as it was in Lang's melodrama, and now updated to include ennui, accident and absurdity among the forces destructive to love. Ravishing color photography by Raoul Coutard.
