Plan 9 from Outer Space
Considered by many to be the worst film ever made, Plan 9 from Outer Space is distinguished by the last appearance of Bela Lugosi, who died one week into the shooting and was replaced by a double who looks nothing like him. He plays one of the living dead, along with his wife, Vampira, a pawn in an alien plan (#9) to revive corpses for military purposes. Made on an almost non-existent budget, with special effects that are especially ineffective, it is the film about which Joe Dante, Jr. wrote, “There is a distinct possiblity that it was the cheapest film ever made. The entire cast was awful...and even the old clips of Bela Lugosi were poor. The scene where Tor Johnson rose from the grave was the only good five seconds in the whole film.” One of few films about which there is such a broad consensus of opinion, Plan 9 is, we almost forgot to mention, also a lot of fun.
