Poetry in Motion
Poetry in Motion is a “living” tribute to over 24 North American poets who speak for themselves in performance, interview, monologue and harangue. “The first film poetry anthology” is unique not only in its scope, but in its dynamic visual context in which the oral tradition of poetry comes brilliantly to life. Poetry in Motion also illuminates the history of an entire generation of poets. Among the bards are those who tore through the protective layers of '50s culture, Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder and William Burroughs; and several crucial to the cultural transformation of the '60s, such as Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Diane di Prima, Ed Sanders and Ann Waldman. More recently, Miguel Algarin, Ntozake Shange, John Giorno and Christopher Dewdney have been guerillas on the language liberation front. The list goes on: Tom Waits, Jim Carroll, John Cage, Charles Bukowski and others. Poetry in Motion, Mann's second feature, followed in the tradition of his first film, Imagine the Sound, in winning the Chicago Film Festival prize for Best Documentary. Poetry in Motion has been selected for Filmex '83.
