Poet's Pub

In the late forties, during one of Britain's regular financial crises, and with the lush years of internationally successful prestige productions behind them, the Rank Studios launched a series of deliberately economical minor films, initially called "Independent Frame" productions. The idea was to make films almost entirely in the studio, using prefabricated sets, a maximum of back projection, and simple stories of a nationalistic nature. Poet's Pub is somewhat of an offshoot of this group, branching out rather more, and getting out of the studio into the fresh air. It's a forgettable film, but an enjoyable one-both witty and wacky, with good dialogue and amusing slapstick. William K. Everson
