Poko and Sey Seyeti (One Man, Several Women) and Lecture by Prof. Semere Haile
Poko
“Poko and her husband await the birth of their first child. But when she goes into labor, the midwife finds that the pregnancy is complicated and the village elders decide that Poko should be taken to the city for emergency care. All of the villagers pitch in to provide an ‘ambulance' for Poko, and some accompany the couple along the way. Despite these efforts, the unpaved road makes the trip hazardous for the young woman, and the story ends in tragedy. Poko calls attention to the uneven development between urban and rural areas in post-independence (Burkina Faso (former Upper Volta)).” Renee Tajima
