A Pot Worth a Million Ryo (Hyakuman Ryo no Tsubo)
“This was the third in a series of Nikkatsu films based on the popular legend of the swordsman Tange Sazen. One of the most recognizable characters in Japanese cinema for the slashing scar across his right eye and his lack of a right arm, Tange Sazen made a superstar of Denjiro Okochi. This episode, about a frantic search for an earthenware jar mistaken for one of value, was directed by Sadao Yamanaka (1909-1938), a brilliant young director (known chiefly for the masterpiece Humanity and Paper Balloons, 1936). His satiric treatment of the subject angered Tange's creator and made problems for Nikkatsu, but the film is a hilarious romp that scored with the audience” (David Owens, Japan Film Center). “We are clearly a far cry from the austere narrative of the shomin-geki... We are, in fact, startlingly close to René Clair, or even Renoir” (Noel Burch, To the Distant Observer).
