Premieres from UCB's Journalism Department

Tonight we celebrate the premiere of three documentaries completed through UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism as thesis projects. Jennifer Paige and Michael Juarez's Greetings from Nowhere: Denizens of the Desert is a road trip through the desert that explores why people are drawn to arid landscapes. We journey to Rachel, Nevada, where UFO sightings are commonplace; Jawbone Canyon, California, where weekend desert rats flock to Mojave desert canyons with their dirt bikes; and Death Valley Junction, California, home to a seventy-something ballet dancer who performs regularly for adoring crowds. (1998, 28:30 mins, Color/B&W). Doubled Over by Suzanne Yeo and Michelle Ling is a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of stand-up comedy. The film focuses on two young San Francisco comics trying to "make it"; through their struggles, the film shows that the funny business is not all laughs. (1998, c. 50 mins, Color). John Clark and Todd Schindler's Killer is the story of Juaquin "Killer" Gallardo, an 18-year-old amateur boxer from the Bay Area who has trained since the age of three to be a champion. Chronicling Gallardo's quest to make the 1996 Olympic Boxing Team, it focuses on the fiercely intimate relationship between Gallardo and his stepfather/coach. (1997, 48:30 mins, Color). Doug Foster is the former editor of Mother Jones Magazine and now serves as Director of the Graduate School of Journalism.
