Program IV: Masculine/Feminine
The Men of Mal Tiempo (Alejandro Saderman, Cuba, 1968, 30 mins): "This is not a historical documentary; it is a fiesta of memory," as five centenarians recall-and then reenact-the Battle for Mal Tiempo during Cuba's war for independence from Spain. In a symphonic crescendo, the entire battle is in play, complemented by intermittent motion sequences that evoke the distance traversed by subjective memory. Filmminutos (Cuba, 1982-83, 1 min each): The Wolfman (Jose Reyes); Pyramid Terror (Noel Lima); Maternity (Jose Reyes); Torture (Noel Lima); Disillusioned Lover (Noel Lima). And What Does Your Mother Do? (Eulalia Carrizosa, Colombia, 1983, 10 mins): With energy and good humor, Latin America's longest-standing women's film collective addresses the age-old concept of "women's work." The Bogeyman (Cacho Briceño, Venezuela, 1990, 12 mins): Violence textures the daily life of a young Venezuelan family; the television is both witness and partial instigator of a "trivial" domestic drama. Miss Universe in Peru (Grupo Chaski, Peru, 1986, 32 mins): A film dissecting images of women as a motor of consumption-and television's role in the process. Using televised footage of a Miss Universe contest alternating with shots of a women's conference held concurrently in Lima, the film underlines the artificiality and invasiveness of the television image. But the film itself raises intricate issues of complicity in the making of consumable images.
