: An almost modernist homage to the traditional puppet show featuring Punch, Merry Andrew and a guinea pig. As in the tradition, a violent fight ensues... Nineteenth century illustrations, baroque angels and collages of old newspaper cuttings are witness to Svankmajer's early surreal-mannerism. A brilliantly orchestrated soundtrack plus razor-sharp montage editing makes the film a tour-de-force.
