Queen of Blood

Dennis Hopper again teamed-up with Curtis Harrington for this Roger Corman outer space extravaganza, also known as Planet of Blood. But this time, the collaboration is a bit short-lived. Dr. Farraday (Basil Rathbone) leads an expedition to Mars to rescue the survivors of a wrecked spaceship. What the crew (Dennis Hopper, John Saxon, Judi Meredith) discovers is a sole inhabitant, a green-skinned alien woman with glowing eyes. On the voyage back to earth, the Martian reveals an alien sense of cuisine: she dines on blood. Hopper is the first victim and it's probably his most draining role. The crew tries to distract the Queen's bloody appetite with the ship's plasma supply, but it's all in vain. Harrington recalled, "Roger Corman had acquired some spectacular Russian footage of spaceships. I saw the footage and wrote a screenplay around it. We shot the film in seven and a half days at a cost of $65,000." The cast-in this case, the crew-doesn't take the vampiric story very seriously and there is a sense of levity permeating the cheap knock-down sets. As for Dennis Hopper, Queen of Blood marks the end of his wholesome period as the handsome, athletic protagonist. This trip into outer space, soon led to The Trip (1967) into inner space.
