Raskolnikow

Robert Wiene adapted Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment to the German expressionist cinema with the aid of actors from the famous Moscow Art Theatre, on tour at the time in Germany. Like Francis in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Raskolnikow is a tortured, paranoid figure whose inner state is reflected in the film's decor and visual distortions.
